Andrew Welsh-Huggins

Andrew, a mystery novelist and short story writer, is excited to be presenting at this year’s Into the Springs workshop.

Andrew’s latest book, The End of the Road, was named one of the best thrillers of the first half of 2023 by Library Journal and called by Kirkus, “A crackerjack crime yarn chockablock with miscreants and a supersonic pace.”

Andrew is also the author of seven books in the Shamus- and Juno Award-nominated Andy Hayes private eye series, featuring a former Ohio State and Cleveland Browns quarterback turned investigator. Library Journal called the latest book, An Empty Grave, “a satisfying, complex story for readers who enjoy hard-boiled private eyes who struggle with their personal lives.”

Andrew is also the editor of the Columbus Noir anthology, a collection of fourteen mystery stories each set in a different Columbus neighborhood, named one of CrimeReads’ most anticipated crime books of 2020.

Andrew’s short mystery fiction has appeared in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, Mystery Weekly, and many others. His stories have also appeared in multiple anthologies, including Best American Mystery Stories 2021; Mickey Finn 21st Century Noir, Vols. 1, 3 and 4; Paranoia Blues: Crime Fiction Inspired by the Songs of Paul Simon; Groovy Gumshoes: Private Eyes in the Psychedelic Sixties; and the 2021 Bouchercon convention anthology This Time for Sure. Andrew’s story, "The Murderous Type," won the 2017 Al Blanchard Prize for Best New England Short Crime Story.

In addition, Andrew is the author of two nonfiction books: No Winners Here Tonight, the definitive history of Ohio's death penalty, and Hatred At Home, about the terrorism prosecution of three Ohio friends, which Current Reviews for Academic Libraries called “the most thorough case study of the radicalization of domestic ‘sleeper cells’ to date.”

When he’s not writing, Andrew enjoys running, reading, cooking, playing piano, playing tennis, spending time with family, and trying to remember why having both cats and parakeets seemed like a good idea at the time. A son of the Finger Lakes and a Kenyon College graduate, Andrew now calls himself a “proud native adopted Ohioan.”

Acclaim for Andrew’s Work

The End of the Road is an elegant crime story … packed with quirky, entertaining characters and told in flowing prose that has a life of its own…. Recommend this to action fans and to anyone who can respond to golden—if blood-soaked—prose. ~The Booklist

In Hatred at Home: al-Qaida on Trial in the American Midwest, Andrew Welsh-Huggins captures the unease in our backyards. He objectively explores the nature of the nation’s new and incredible balancing act—providing federal agents with the investigative and legal tools needed to prevent another 9/11, while still trying to safeguard long-cherished civil rights. ~The Columbus Dispatch

Femme fatales, shady clubs and antiheroes: all the elements are here in Columbus Noir, a satisfying collection of 14 stories by some of Ohio’s best authors, in a series of more than 100 books in an award-winning series that includes locales like Bagdad Noir and Wall Street Noir ~Akron Beacon Journal

Ohio Audiobook Narrators, featuring Becky White, Angus Freathy, Gary Smith, Gretchen LaBuhn

Ohio Audiobook Narrators (OAN) began in 2018 when Angus Freathy, Becky White, Gary Smith and a few other professional narrators began to get together informally to share tips, tricks and suggestions on how to improve their audio book productions.

OAN was initially established to provide education and networking opportunities for Ohio-based narrators and they added to their ranks.

They began networking with authors and developed connections with the Ohio Writers’ Association (OWA). This led to OAN’s involvement in producing three of OWA’s recent anthologies, Outcasts: An Anthology, Metamorphosis: An Anthology, and, just recently, House of Secrets: Every Room Holds a Story. Outcasts received a Silver Award at the Hear Now Palooza 2023.

About Becky White

In addition to narration, Becky, as a coach, has worked with Sean Pratt for nonfiction audio book narration, George “The Tech” Whittam for home studio setup, editing and mastering; accent help for actors, James Foster’s “Fostering Characters”; the Northeast Virtual Narrators Conference (2020) and Johnny Helller Michigan Workshop (2019).

Becky is also self-published under Hearing is Believing, LLC. She produces for Dreamscape Media, Morgan James Publishing, and the Ohio Writers’ Association.

About Angus Freathy

Angus’ measured British delivery has been featured in over 60 audio books of various genres, both fiction and non-fiction.  He most enjoys narrating historical fiction and short stories. But his talents don’t end there. Angus is also fluent in French and has several “Learn French” audio books on offer.

Retired after an international career with a multi-national food company, Angus is enjoying a relaxed “second career” bringing authors’ words to life.

About Gary Smith

Gary has narrated over 20 audio books on business, self-improvement and fiction with ACX and other producers. After a career in marketing and advertising, he brings an author's work to life with smooth, engaging storytelling. His other pursuits are aviation, scuba diving and the occasional round of golf.

For Into the Springs

The three founders of Ohio Audiobook Narrators and member Gretchen will present a three-hour session entitled, "What Authors Need to Know About Audio Books & How They Are Produced."

The session will cover these aspects:

*Why should I consider an audio book version of my work?

*How do professional narrators produce an audio book?

*As an author, what are the pros and cons of self-narrating my own work?

*What do I need to know about audio book production contracts?

*Is vocal A.I. a viable alternative for narrating an audio book?

Sample narrations will demonstrate narration techniques and used to compare human with A.I. voice.
